I've been excited to get my hands on this for several days - even to the point where I almost blew off work just to read it! While not quite as good as the last, the 'Fiery heart' was a great followup to the bloodlines books. We even get a cameo from Rose, Lissa and Christian!
The 'Fiery Heart' sees Sydney and Adrian's relationship enter the next level and things seem to be going right for a change. Sydney begins to make a breakthrough discovery that could prove invaluable for Alchemist defectors. Even her relationship with her sister Zoe is improving. Yet family ties once again becomes strained when Sydney's Mother files for a divorce from her Father, and she suddenly finds herself in the middle of a bitter custody battle over Zoe.
The fourth installment is a little unique because we get to see the inner workings of two beloved characters rather than one - that of Adrian and Sydney. It was an interesting risk Mead took and I admit I was a little dubious. So many authors try to take that path and fail. An enjoyable series that started out with a single first-person narrator could suddenly turn into a confusing and disconnected mess merely because it's author decides to tell the story from the viewpoints of several characters rather than one.
I didn't feel that was the case here. For the most part I thought the scenes transitioned well between the two characters and only on a few occasions did I feel disconnected from the Bloodlines universe when the POV shifted from Adrian to Sydney and vice versa. On the plus side, this made the romance even more of a guilty pleasure - because we get to see the romance through the eyes of Adrian!
Richelle Mead delivered another wholly satisfying read. It was intense, exciting, sweet, tender, and shocking. I loved every moment and am eager to read the next book. :)
There's so much going on in this book but I think my favorite thing about The Fiery Heart is the maturing of the characters that takes place. I admire Sydney more and more with every book. Sydney really has to balance all the elements of her life now that her worlds are colliding with Zoe's arrival. Her feelings for Adrian grow intense and I delighted in watching the continuing evolution of her beliefs about dhampirs and Moroi. Zoe, and the imminent divorce of their parents, prove to be trying for Sydney. She wants to be a sister to Zoe buy finds it difficult when having to deal with Alchemist propaganda - not to mention Sydney's having to hide her new relationship with Adrian.
Adrian has been undergoing a transformation for awhile but the changes he exhibits in The Fiery Heart were truly remarkable. He is certainly no longer that young man only concerned with his selfish desires. The extent to which he feels for Sydney was on full display. Even Trey and Evangeline, and Eddie and Jill show some maturity by making some headway in changing their thinking on the matters of mixing races.
Another of my favorite aspects of The Fiery Heart? Getting Adrian's POV. Thank you, Ms. Mead, for allowing us inside Adrian's head. I adored getting his side of the story. I already though Adrian was swoon-worthy but he's even more swoon-y now!
I enjoyed watching Sydney's abilities using magic improve, as well as how her opinions of the use of magic change.
